Search engine marketing has gone from simplicity to complexity and in the meantime turned into a gigantic online business where billions of dollars are spent on contextual advertisements, search engine optimization and performance technologies. Yet, one concept remains the same.
Search engine marketing is still a business of probable predictions. It is a guessing game. No matter how cleverly you design your Website and announce it to the world you can never predict the exact result. You can only do the best of your ability. However, when a definition is needed then this one from Search Engine Land will do just fine: "It is the process of gaining traffic from or visibility on search engines"

If the revenue part of the search engine business was known in the mid-nineties then we might have a different landscape in the search engine industry today, but we will never know for sure.
There are many experts in search engine marketing that provide an outstanding quality and quantity of information on this ever-expanding and constantly emerging industry.
