Using HTML H1-H6 Headings

The headings tag (H1...H6) is a tag of many disguises. It has by default certain size, but it does not always appear in that form. It has a special role in the structure of HTML Web pages, but Web designers do not always apply the headings tag to that role. This may sound confusing, but so are many things in HTML.

The headings tag is often associated with Web sites' findability and content optimization. Some say the header tag can increase importance of words placed inside it giving those words and phrases better chance for a prominent position within search engine results. According to that theory the largest headings tag, H1, should be the most important one. This makes at least some sense, but this may not be the case anymore with the major search engines because of the overuse of the H1, H2 and H3 tags by many webmasters to add more juice to certain words and phrases. It is also very easy for search engine spiders to find out inappropriate use or overuse of the header tags.

Therefore, applying common sense on the heading tag it tells us that the best application of the heading tag is to structure HTML documents for better reading and understanding as originally intended.
