Trends in Usage of Java Scripts and Frameworks

Java Script usage has become a standard for scripting Web pages. Its reputation as the scripting programming language for the Web is growing. One day it might become the primary programming language for the Web. Some might say Java Script is an easy language to learn and use, but others may have different opinion and both sides have an argument. However, its programming model may not be reason for its wide adoption on the Web's landscape.

Java Script's syntax is very similar to C-based programming languages, but its object model is unique and very flexible which makes it very easy to extend and write powerful libraries and frameworks for it and that may be the reason for its wide adoption.

Libraries, frameworks and associated plugins have arrived in countless numbers, often free to use and/or open source, making it very easy to use Java Script and include scripts in Web pages. The frameworks and libraries often simplify the use of Java Script to the point that users with little or no programming skills can use them to add flavor to their Web sites.

The data table and chart shows the usage of scripts on two samples of shopping sites with one having favorable search engine positions and the third is a large sample of general Web sites for comparison.

Java Script and Frameworks Usage: Percentage Found
Observed Element General Merchandise General Merchandise SE General
script 82.1 86.8 87.0
On-Page Scripts 87.1 90.7 93.0
jQuery References 8.2 17.6 13.2
Prototype References 5.4 10.8 9.7
Ext JS References 1.1 2.0 2.6
Mootools References 0.7 3.4 2.4
Rico References 0.7 2.0 3.7
YUI Library References 1.1 1.0 1.6

The Java Script framework and library reference based on commonly used references, is just an indicator, and gives just an idea of their usage within these samples.

Java Script and Frameworks Usage: Percentage Found

The data table and chart shows that 80-90% of online shops use scripts either as inline on Web pages or as links to external files, which is little less than the general average, but shows relatively wide adoption of Java Script, libraries and frameworks on shopping sites.

Using Java Script and Ajax techniques to display product information is a way for online shops to make their Web sites load faster and add visual enhancements that may appeal to potential clients. This shows online shops are moving forward, but those having favorable search engine positions are more likely to use Java Script frameworks and libraries.
