Books and articles on content and search engine optimization often mention keyword and phrase analysis and generation. Search engines have come of age and they are better at understanding Web page content and text than ever before. The practice of the past to include duplicate keywords in Web page content does not help today's Webmasters; it is outdated optimization technique.
However, understanding and analyzing Web page content and figuring out what are the most important keywords and phrases related to a Web page textual content and topic is important. This can help in creating content that is on topic and in harmony with other content on a Web site. It can also help in adjusting text and positioning important keywords contained in a Web page textual content so that it reflects their importance.
The table below is obtained from two large samples of Web sites and two smaller samples showing data on words found in the Title tag that are also in Meta description. This is often an indicator of Web page optimization efforts.
| Title Words in Meta Description | ||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Observed Element | Observed Category | % Found | Average | Min | Max | Median | 80 Percentile Range | |
| Title Words in Meta Description | Prominent SE Position | 73.69 | 4.37 | 1.00 | 19.00 | 3.57 | 1.29 - 7.70 | |
| Title Words in Meta Description | General | 64.58 | 4.54 | 1.00 | 18.67 | 4.50 | 1.50 - 8.38 | |
| Title Words in Meta Description | Web 2.0 Oriented | 51.58 | 3.31 | 1.00 | 13.00 | 1.00 | 1.00 - 6.20 | |
| Title Words in Meta Description | Web Design | 92.16 | 5.66 | 1.00 | 18.00 | 6.00 | 2.00 - 10.00 | |

Web sites having prominent positions in search engine results are more likely to include Title words in the Meta description than Web sites of general category and Web 2.0 oriented Web sites, but Web sites of Web design category are most likely when comparing these four samples. Web designers obviously consider content optimization when designing their Web sites.
