Picking the Right Colors for Your Ads

Picking the right colors for a Web project, Web page or advertisement can be a tricky task. Many things need consideration for all the elements to work together in harmony. Even though a Web designer believes he has a perfect copy ready for the world it does not necessarily mean the world is ready for the design. Fortunately, there are safe heavens when working with colors.

Primary colors and their secondary colors

The graphic above shows the primary colors and the secondary colors. Mixing each of the primary colors with the next will create the secondary colors. Applying the same step will eventually create all the colors in the world. Generally, the primary colors and their complements are safe to use.

The primary and secondary colors look good together, especially when one complements the other. The example below shows how these six colors work together as a background on a standard banner (468 x 60 pixels) and how they look together as textual arts. Mixing only two or three colors can indeed be very powerful.

Banner and text color examples

We have experimented with only six colors and for Web pages, there are 216 colors known to be safe to use which means the colors should look the same in most displays. For fine-grained design, 256 colors are far from being enough and fortunately, most displays can handle millions of colors.
