Blogs appeared some ten years ago and personal Web publishing took off in a big way a few years later with a momentum in the volumes of blogs. The volumes of blogs that appeared brought with them volumes of on-page links and link rolls never seen before on the Web's landscape. Suddenly the Web environment, that had been reluctant to link, was eager to link to other Web sites.
Why is classified advertising such a popular way to advertise? The ads are small, commonly text-only and contain limited description of the product and services advertised. Everywhere you look on the Web the resemblance with classified advertising is overwhelming with display advertising banners being an exception.
Surfing, browsing or clicking away on the Web over the course of two decades occasionally reminds of old Web sites or old Web services. One Web service that popped to mind is the first search engine multi-submit services that provided a way for its users to post URLs to many search engines from a single form. Multi-submit services exist today, but there is no need for webmasters to submit URLs to the major search engines since they will find it somehow and index automatically.
The Web is large. The number of active domains is probably hundreds of millions in addition to various types of hosted Web pages such as blogs, promotional Web pages and business profiles making the number of active Web sites reach billions. Thankfully, most Web sites are unique in content and look with the exception of blog hubs and profile based Web hosting.
In the beginning of blogging, the format of blogs was simple with text content, occasional image or photo, and a way to exchange or distribute information about blog posts via RSS feeds and pings. Blogging has evolved. The blog publishing engines are more or less a Web publishing platforms capable of managing complex and huge online magazines.
Social media, social bookmarking, social networks and the social graph are buzzwords, but nowadays they come with a proven concept. It is a proven concept where people connect via words, links, and multi-media and shared interests. Even though it is common to categorize blogs and discussion boards as social media, their history goes back beyond the social media concepts. The ever-increasing size of screen resolution in the past years makes Web sites appear different when viewed with wide screens. Web sites 800 pixels wide were the standard few years back, but today they look strange viewed with a screen resolution of 1600 or 1920 pixels.
Searching the Web is in phases. One phase is when you want to search the entire Web quickly and efficiently. That is when you use the major search engines and type in keywords or key phrases and expects relevant results to appear quickly in a traditional way.
